Message from the ESP President

Dear Colleagues and Friends of the ESP,
It is with great honour that I address you as the new President of the European Society of Pathology. On Wednesday, 10 September 2025 during our General Assembly at ECP 2025 in Vienna, I had the privilege of succeeding Prof. Peter Schirmacher, whose leadership and commitment have greatly strengthened our Society.
The European Congress of Pathology (ECP 2025) was truly extraordinary. With nearly 6,000 delegates from all continents, this year’s Congress reaffirmed the European Congress of Pathology as the leading global meeting in our field. Beyond the impressive numbers, what made it so special was the spirit of community, curiosity, and collaboration you brought to Vienna. It was inspiring to see colleagues, friends, and new generations of pathologists coming together to share knowledge, ideas, and friendship.
I would like to extend my warmest thanks to:
- the thousands of delegates from across the world who made ECP 2025 such a truly international gathering.
- the Local Organising Committee and the Austrian Society for Clinical Pathology and Molecular Pathology (ÖGPath), especially Prof. Renate Kain, for hosting us so graciously in Vienna.
- the ESP working groups and affiliated societies, the Education and Trainee Subcommittees, the Advisory Board, associated societies, clinical and educational associations for shaping a rich and forward-looking scientific programme.
- our industry partners, exhibitors, and sponsors, whose valued support enriches both the educational and social success of the Congress; and
- above all, the ESP staff, whose tireless dedication, good spirit, and behind-the-scenes work ensured that every detail of ECP 2025 ran smoothly.
As I begin my mandate, I feel both humbled and excited about the journey ahead. I look forward to building on the achievements of my predecessor, to strengthening ESP’s role in advancing pathology worldwide, and—most of all—to continuing to work in the friendly and collaborative spirit that makes our Society so special.
ESP is a collective effort, and the ESP executive committee that I am already chairing will be glad to discuss and consider any suggestions made by the members.
Thank you once again for making ECP 2025 Vienna such a remarkable success.
I am deeply grateful, and I look forward to seeing many of you again at upcoming ESP initiatives and future congresses.
With warm regards,
Prof. Xavier Matias-Guiu
President, European Society of Pathology
